This was a great article on a retrospective study where the researchers viewed the charts of 186 patients to test the sensitivity of PEWS in this population as an objective tool to predict critical deterioration. This is such a timely and relevant issue in our practice. Please review the following questions and provide your comments and feedback.
1. This study showed that PEWS are likely to be critical at points in time during the 24-hr period before a RRT or code blue event occurs. Reflecting on your experience with the documentation of PEWS greater than or equal to 4, have you found this to be true (basically an association between high/critical PEWS and RRT/code blue occurrence within 24hrs). Please provide an example.
2. Base on the evidence from this study, will this change your practice in any way? Please be specific.
3. Do you believe that the PEWS can serve as an objective tool in validating nurses' clinical appraisal of their patient's changing status, thus facilitating early recognition, clinician consultation, and additional monitoring? If so, provide examples of this in your practice.[/u] |
